We entered this war as a peace-keeping force to ensure the safety of British Citizens and other Foreign Nationals and to transport them to the safety of the British Sovereign Base at Royal Air Force Station Akrotiri. We were not to engage the Turkish forces. We had been notified that there were Turkish Military road blocks along some of our routes. We were to request them to allow us through without conflict. We were not to open fire. On one occasion we were fired upon, but were not authorized to open fire ourselves. We were a peace-keeping force. Historical information and some of the operations that involved us are covered in this book. The Turkish airborne assault into Northern Cyprus, the attack on the warships approaching Paphos, the Battle at Kyrenia are only some of the events covered. We were a peace-keeping force and were not to take an aggressive part in this conflict. We did not operate under the UN Banner.

I understand that this is a personal account of the war and respect the author's experiences.

But if you want to know about the Cyprus War of 1974 then this is not going to give you great insight to the general situation - it is very personal and quite narrow.

It is also littered with grammatical mistakes and some factual errors too.

The Cyprus Turkey War 1974 Dylan Casper Jones 9781520819167 Books Reviews

This small volume is a personal account of the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus by an English soldier, Dylan Casper Jones, who played a small role in the events. Jones had apparently served in Northern Ireland previously. Jones’ mission documented in this book was to protect, along with other infantrymen, English tourists and residents in Cyprus.

Jones’ account is significant because it demonstrates a large part of the daily routine of a ground soldier ---- namely, the tedium. The life of a ground soldier is like daily life in the jungle, long periods of boredom punctuated by flashes of sudden, blood-curdling terror.

By and large, this is how Jones’ account reads. He relates how he and his other mates were deplored, where they went, who they “rescued,” what they did afterwards. This is an element of the Cyprus conflict, just as what the American troops did when they “rescued” American medical students studying in Granada. Just not a compelling, riveting, element. So not to disparage Jones’ mission, protecting the English living in Cyprus was important, but not a critical element of the Cyprus conflict.

Having said this, the book is important in putting the Cyprus invasion in perspective. Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus was a complicated, nuanced affair. Jones does a good job in providing a time frame of the invasion and describing the devastation it caused. The book contains photos which are illustrative of the main participants of the invasion.

This account on balance provides a little-known and important aspect of the Cyprus invasion. For those who want to really know EVERYTHING about the conflict, this is a good contribution.
I understand that this is a personal account of the war and respect the author's experiences.
