HONESTLY, I ALMOST QUIT READING IT.......
After struggling through the first ninety pages and not being able to make sense of it, but hating to give up, I kept going and I am glad I did. It became a riveting story that I could hardly put down. Nail became very real as did Veridis. I have heard of jailhouse romances and never could understand how that could possibly happen, yet theirs made sense.
The whole story was told in third person by a young friend named Latha which put a different yet interesting spin on it.
There were times I thought it couldn't possibly have a good end to it and there were times I was optimistic just as Latha tried to be....
I don't want to say too much and ruin the story, but just know that it is worth getting through the slow beginning and into the meat of it. You won't be sorry you stuck with it.

I picked this book for its great kindle price and it looked interesting. it certainly grabbed my attention! the story takes place in the early 1900s in Arkansas, it is narrated by a young girl who becomes a part of the story herself. A man named Nail is wrongly accused of a crime and is sent to death row. The story grows from there, it wasn't predictable at all. I truly love a good story, one that isn't filled with deep descriptive violence or sex. and this is one of those. If I had read the hardcopy of this it would have remained in my home library. You won't be disappointed.
Good story...unlike anything I've read before. Exploring the inhumanity of the death sentence by electric chair in the context of a love story is an amazing accomplishment. I enjoyed learning about the world of Arkansas in the early years if the last century. The juxtaposition of beautiful writing with bizarre and sometimes grotesque story line was challenging but also engrossing. I recommend.
I purchased this book because I loved the title and was intrigued by it. Then I started reading and found myself captivated. For me the story had a similar feel to The Green Mile. Some of the events depicted are horrific, and really stirred up my emotions. The injustice that was portrayed, although fictional, was always firmly rooted in the believable. There are no easy paths in this story.The author used an interesting narrator for the story, someone not present through most of the events but telling the story as if she were, and it works. The indomitable spirit of the main characters shone through every page and made this story one I will not soon forget.
The title of this one is a bit of an enigma for me. Trees that can sing? I like the concept and think it's true, at least at some level. Regardless, the author reinforces the idea throughout the story. The two main characters, Nail and Viridis hear the trees. Their relationship is an improbable, slow stewing love affair. It's hard not to race ahead, hoping that the two of them are able to overcome obstacles and be together.
Nail Chism's story is agonizing and compelling. How can you not pull for this guy? His stint in prison is depicted in a brutal and horrific manner. It's hard to believe that humans are capable of such cruelty yet, the characters and scenes ring true. The dialogue, Ozark infused, sounds accurate if somewhat clunky in the reading.

I love this book! I first came across it in 2001, while working for the publisher. It was a different kind of book for me and still is. I was sucked in, then, by the language and poetry of the book. I revisited it a few years later and loved it just as much. This time, it had been about 10 years since the last reading, and I think I enjoyed it even more. The characters, situations, and places woven into the beautiful prose called out to me and it was almost brand new again. No matter what genres you like, I highly recommend this book!
I had never heard of Donald Harrington and stumbled upon this book by chance. And how lucky I was! What a wonderful book. I couldn't put it down. I had to keep reading. And not in the hasty way, skimming over the pages just to see how the story would end, although of course I did want to know. I was pining for Viridis and Nail all the way through the book. But apart from the great story, the language is so beautiful, the description of the land, of the people, of the way of life in the Ozarks a century ago... it all left me speechless and strangely fulfilled.
I am not an American, English isn't even my native language, but i was impressed by the way Mr. Harrington managed to capture the cadences of local speech, not only in the actual dialogue but throughout the storytelling. It was as if I could hear voices telling me the story, instead of just reading it. I was even more impressed when I read that the writer lost his hearing when he was only twelve years old.
Thank you, Mr. Harrington, for writing such a wonderful book and for giving me so much pleasure reading it.
This is a remarkable book by a novelist who has a poet's skill with language, Told from multiple perspectives, it's the tail of an Ozarks bootlegger and shepherd, Nail Chism, who is wrongly and corruptly accused of murder, and the efforts of a very emancipated (for 1914) woman to clear his name and free him. I loved it on a page-by-page basis, and the prose is marvelous, but in the end I had plot issues. On the other hand, Chism's solo odyssey through the mountains to find his way home is bravura writing, as is the story of his savior's years in Paris as she learns to paint and to live a life much broader than the one she was originally destined for. I will read other books by Harrington,
